Causal inference applied to etiological epidemiology. Three frameworks for causal inference: sufficient and component causes model; counterfactual model; causal diagrams. Application of causal inference frameworks to the formulation of structural hypothesis.

Complex systems paradigm and methods in epidemiological research.
Causes and predictors: application of population-level evidence to risk prediction and implications for prevention.
Application of advanced methods to deal with complex challenges to the validity of epidemiologic measures: competitive risks and missing data.

Teaching method
Teaching methodologies (including evaluation):
Lectures and group work.
Evaluation: distributed without final exam – presentation and discussion of a scientific paper on the topic of the lecture.
As this curricular unit has 4 ECTs, the student is estimated to dedicate a total of 108 working hours, of which 18 are contact hours, with the following distribution:
· Theoretical lectures (T): 12 hours
· Theorectical-practical classes (TP): 6 hours.
