Objectives

In the end students will be able to:  

Describe the aims of epidemiology and its main uses;

Recognize the main phases of the epidemiological approach to identify health problems and search its causes;  

Describe the main parameters used to measure the frequency of population health and disease status and  their interpretation;

Define the concept of risk, its main variants and interpret its meaning and implications for intervention;

Describe the main types of epidemiological study and the conditions for their application;

Define the concept of screening, describe the conditions for its use and the evaluation of its effects; 

Identify the role of epidemiology for health administration.

Subject matter

Introduction to the unit and e-learning support. Presentation and discussion of the program and timetable;

Introduction to the principles of epidemiology and to the epidemiological methods: relation with other disciplines;

The epidemiological approach and strategy, consequences for health administration;

Specificities of epidemiological research and its relation with other forms of research;

Critical appraisal of epidemiological studies;

Uses of epidemiology in Public Health and Health Administration.

Evaluation of the educational experience.
