Objectives
- To identify key determinants of health and the leading causes of morbidity and mortality throughout the life cycle;
- To discuss the family life cycle and identify the key determinants of family health promotion;
- To identify opportunities for disease prevention and health promotion throughout the life cycle, particularly during critical and sensitive periods;
- Outlining the benefits of breastfeeding in promoting individual and collective health and identify strategies favorable to their promotion;
- To describe the National Immunization Program;
- To identify key determinants of maternal and child health and youth in Portugal and select strategies to its promotion;
- To select strategies for promoting family’s health throughout the lifecycle;
- To outline the principles of healthy eating throughout the life cycle and the role of physical activity in reducing the burden of disease and promoting longevity and quality of life;
- To describe the aging phenomenon in Portugal and identify key factors and strategies that favor healthy and active aging.
Subject matter
- Health promotion in individual and family context, discussion of the concepts;
- The individual lifecycle and the family lifecycle. Sensitive and critical periods - opportunities for disease prevention and health promotion;
- Birth and healthy growth - current situation and strategies for achieving gains in maternal and child health;
- Maternal bonding and the importance of the early mother-child interaction; Early intervention in childhood;
- The importance of breastfeeding and strategies for its promotion;
- The Child and Youth Health Programme;
- The National Programme on Immunization;
- The health of the young Portuguese people. Healthy adolescence promoting factors. Learning self-management of health and prevention of risk behaviors;
- Active and healthy adult life. The prevention and control of chronic diseases and health problems most prevalent in Portugal;
- Physical activity and healthy eating throughout the life cycle;
- The promotion of healthy and active aging.
