Objectives
a) To acquire and develop technical and conceptual skills in the field of Music Analysis;
b) To acquire knowledge about the main music-theoretical currents of thought in the relevant period;
c) To develop the ability to relate musical phenomena to their historical, sociological and philosophical contexts;
d) To become familiar with the musical and music-theatrical repertoire of the period;
e) To become acquainted with the current methods of research, presentation and communication, in line with international musicological standards.

Subject matter
A detailed approach to Western art music of the 1st half of the 20th century, in close parallel with the corresponding unit of History of Music. Close analytical study of a selected number of musical works, from the point of view of the innovations in the musical language, evolution of compositional techniques and the dichotomy tonal/atonal, with a special focus on the music of Debussy, Stravinsky and the Second Viennese School.

Teaching method
Teaching method: 60% practical sessions, 40% theoretical. The course will combine theoretical exposition, discussion of musical examples and musical analysis practice as well as auditory analysis practice.
Evaluation method
Active participation at sessions, practical work and discussion (10%). A paper on musical analysis (30%). A final assessment (60%).
