Objectives
a) To acquire general knowledge about the 17th and 18th century Culture in Portugal and to analyze diversified cultural productions concerning this period.
b) To develop research about this period hence contributing to the usage of appropriate tools for such study.
c) To develop appropriate and accurate tools in written and oral communication
d) To develop competences in critical and scientific analysis
e) To develop ethical standards in academic work and autonomous learning skills throughout life
Prerequisites
None.
Subject matter
1-Portugal in the 17th and 18th centuries: the national and the international situation. Europe and the overseas spaces. The Inquisition, the Jesuits, the gold from Brazil, the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon
2-Portugal through the eyes of nationals and foreigners. Analytical constraints: politics, religion, knowledge and cultural representation
3-Cultural changes. Criticism, Pombal politics, educational reform, repression.
4-Society and culture. Spaces and their organization, social groups, daily life, leisure, performative arts and political power, religion, poverty and luxury, schooling and the circulation of ideas.
