Objectives

1. Acquire an overview of the framework of archaeological activity in Portugal and Europe.
2. Identify the key elements of the Portuguese legislation on the archaeological heritage.
3. Understanding the specificity of archaeological heritage protection.
4. Knowing the rules of archaeologist´s professional ethics.

Prerequisites

Subject matter

1. The concept of a law rule in an organized society.
2.International legislation on the protection of the archaeological heritage: Conventions, Agreements and Recommendations.
3. Principal Portuguese diplomas in the field of archeology.
4. The ethical and professional code of an archaeologist.

Teaching method

Lectures accompanied by audiovisual information.
Practical classes with analysis of legislation.

Evaluation method

Evaluation based on two elements (worth 50% of final assessment each): a written test (individual and presencial) with consultation of legislation; an work of practical application about classification processes, reports of interventions, archaeological protection systems in other EU countries, etc., to present and discuss in class.
