Objectives

The Law has been challenged to find new formulations to try and juridically regulate and ordain social experiences, in an ongoing process of critical evalation of concepts.
Therefore, aims of this seminar are as follows:
Assim, os objectivos da cadeira são:
a) Reflect on the social construction of law, using the Portuguese migratory experience as a case study;
b) Enable the students with a proper capacity to participate in teams dealing with and \"managing\" diversity, both in public and private institutions, for profit and not for profit, national and international;
c) Enable the students with the proper capacities to carry on research projects, in a semi-autonomous way.

Some previous notes on citizenship, human rights and cultural rights
The Portuguese law and the recognition of minorities
The EU anti-discrimination regulation
Religious freedom and religious communities´ rights
The idea of race in the formation of the Portuguese nation
The protection against racial discrimination in Portugal
The Constitutional satute recognized to foreigners and immigrants´ rights
The law on citizenship
Refugees and the fundamental right to asylum
The role of international organizations

Teaching method

Some classes are based on theoretical exposés and others on practical exercises. The former consist in 3 introductory sessions, and 9 presentations on specific topics by invited speakers; the latter on students´ presentation and discussion of their projected essay or research plan.

Evaluation method

Continuous evaluation of participation in class presentations and discussions (25%), presentation and discussion, in class, of the essay or the research plan (25%), essay or research plan (50%).
