Objectives

1) Translation of literary prose and resolution of problems faced by the prose-translator in finding terms in his own language that express faithfully the meaning of certain words.
2) Analysis of denotative and connotative meanings.
3) Difficulties arisen from specific characteristics in content and style.
4) Analysis of neologisms and particular cultural references.

Subject matter

1.To study and translate literary Works in prose written in german language published between XVIIIth and the XXth centuries: G.E.Lessing,J.W.v.Goethe,Brüder Grimm,Th.Storm,G.Keller,F.Kafka,H.Hesse, F.Dürrenmatt..
1.2.Studying and observing style and coherence shown in every paradigmatic chosen literary work/excerpt.
2.Translating the studied work in accordance with the analysis previously made and the synthesis reflecting the literary strategy principles the final result will reflect.
3.Theorizing on the principles gained with the teamwork translations sessions.

Teaching method

Translation exercises will take place in every teamgroup session. German literary texts will be selected and previously handed out in order to develop translator’s proficiency according to this seminar targets: coherent translation according to the respective literary form, perception of text literariness; consciousness of a translator as a literary writer knowing his historical epoch.

Evaluation method

Assessment will focus on: 1) production of two written assignments (80%=16) translation of a literary excerpt from a known author and work. 2) every participation every student is invited to produce in every teamwork session (20%=4).
