Objectives

a) -To learn the architectural movements from the end of the eighteenth century to beginning of twentieth century and to achieve an international perspective of these tendencies in conjunction with the portuguese political and cultural history.

b) - To master the main concepts of neo-classicism, romanticism, symbolism. as well as the concepts of eclecticism, historicism, revival, neo-Gothic, neo-Manueline, neo Romanesque and \"Portuguese house\".in field of portuguese architectural history.

c) - To acquire the fundamental knowledge of the architectural heritage of XIX century through out academic visits to the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, public buildings, palaces and urban spaces, selected as study cases.

d)- To achieve a critical view of the portuguese architecture of the nineteenth century by mastering its classique and recent bibliography.

e)- To be able to visualize the possible research lines on each of the subjects studied and to carry on future res

4) - The Romanticism: The Pena Palace and the concept of landscape architecture
5) - Cinatti e Rambois: from late neoclassic to revival architecture
6) Jeronimos monastery and the architectural heritage and restoration
6) - Eclectismo: from the urbanism to architecture. Models and tipes
7) - The interiors and the fine arts of \"fin de siècle\".
8) - The neo-Manuelin from José Luis Monteiro to Luigi Manini
9) -Raul Lino and the « portuguese house».

Teaching method

The program is organized in lectures supported by visual material and and by visits to buildings and urban places in Lisbon and Porto.

Evaluation method

The assessment consists of two essays with an extension of 1000 words, one in the field of architecture and the other in the field of urban space. One of them must be presented in class. All students are also submitted to a written test covering all the subjects taught. The attendance and class participation also are included in the assessment.

The final grade is the arithmetic average of the four evaluation items, which of them corresponding to 25% of the general evaluation.
