Objectives
It is intended that the student be able to:
a. deepen the theoretical and methodological knowledge essential to the study of heritage and museum themes;
B. reflect on the current balance and museum situation in Portugal, and deliver advanced training in this area for cultural institutions of local and territorial level;
c. preparing original analysis, drafting complex texts and communicate correctly and affordable way to diverse audiences, the results of a survey about heritage and museums;
d. develop original applications on heritage dynamics;
e. acquire skills enabling disclosure of the built heritage and museum assets at the municipal level, based on a thorough understanding of its historical dimension;
f. acquire the skills for advanced training in the field of Culture Practices.

Subject matter
The contents are structured and crosswise articulated in six thematic groups of theoretical and applied approach:
1. Legal framework of heritage and museums in Portugal. Competences of municipalities.
2. Heritage, museums and cultural practices - brief historical approach and key concepts in a contemporary perspective.
3. Institutions, instruments and heritage protection means.
4. Heritage management and museums.
5. Communication and dissemination of heritage. Heritage education.
6. Heritage and local development.

Teaching method
Theoretical sessions with a discursive dimension, with integration of the contents presented in class and on topics previously prepared by students.
Sessions debate practices on the recent activity in the area of museology and cultural heritage and about the case studies chosen by students during the seminar.
Study visits.
Evaluation method
Attendance and overall participation in the seminar - 25%.
Preparation of an essay or project work, presented and discussed at the seminar - 50%.
Development of a critical review – 25%.
