Objectives
The aim of curricular unit is to provide basic knowledge, competencies and skills in Biotechnology. This course provides an overview of biotechnology in the microbial, agricultural, animal, and medical fields.
Prerequisites
Previous attendance of the Laboratory Techniques in Biology I and II, Molecular Biology, and Molecular Genetics is required.
Subject matter
Microbial Biotechnology
Historical aspects of Microbial Biotechnology. Primary and secondary metabolic products. Microorganisms as cell factories. Expression and secretion vectors. Applications.
Biotechnology Areas of Application
Enzymes: production technologies and their industrial applications.
Plant Biotechnology
Genomes of plants. Plant tissue cultures. Transformation of plants : vectors and methodologies.
Improvement of Plants. Transgenic Plants.
Animal Cells
Culture of animal cells. Applications in Laboratory, Biotech Industries and Pharmaceutical Industry. Therapeutic cloning and regenerative medicine.
