Objectives
The aim of the course is that students be able to: create, integrate and analyze geological and geographic data in order to extract specific information useful for carrying out studies within earth sciences tematic areas.
Prerequisites
For inscription in this course it is advised to succeed in the following courses: General Geology.
Subject matter
The UC is constituted by two parts: Part 1 - include the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and data bases techniques and concepts for acquiring, editing, spatial analysis, integration and organization of thematic cartography data. In this module there are performed 3 practical projects, using ArcGIS software.
Part 2 -are applied concepts and techniques for the interpretation and construction of drillhole logs as well as the construction and interpretaçãode of 2D and 3D litho-stratigraphic profiles. In this module it is developed with Rockworks software a project that aims to build the Logs of a set of drillhole data, the construction of their lithologic and estartigraphical profiles, identification of mineralized horizons and the estimation of the volume of the mineralized strata.

Teaching method
The UC comprises theoretical and practical classes in computer laboratory, with exposure of the subjects in powerpoint and testing of concepts in computer with specific software. Students solve two projects in GIS, including the theoretical concepts (GIS and Database) and a fourth project for the representation and 3D evaluation of a mineral occurrence.
Evaluation method
Continuos evaluation (2 theorectical tests) or final exame + 3 practical projects and respective reports, partially solved in practical classes. The test relate to the subjects of the Powerpoint theorectical presentations. It have a duration of 1:30h and account 50% of the final grade. This component can be replaced by final examination on the scheduled date. The projects are to be solved individually or in grups of two students and accounts 50% of the final grade. Minimum classification for the tests is 6 and the average minimum classification for both components is 10 values (10/20)
