Objectives

The goal of this course is to explain the basic electronic components, such as diodes and transistors (BJTs and MOSFETs). It is required that students learn the electrical characteristics of these components, as well as knowing to implement simple electronic circuits, based on several types of transistors and diodes. The student learns to design multi-stage amplifiers combining BJTs and field effect transistors as well as to analyze basic circuits employing operational amplifiers.

The student will develop the ability to solve problems, work in a team and autonomously. Students also will learn how to improve their ability to manage the available time. Special attention is given to the ability of written and oral presentation of the work

Prerequisites

In addition to the basic knowledge of mathematical manipulation, is considered fundamental  consolidated knowledge of circuit theory, in its various forms, such as steady state DC, forced sinusoidal regime, transient regimes of 1st and  2nd order.

Subject matter

  1. Bipolar junction diodes. The ideal diode. Diode current-voltage characteristic. Circuit analysis with diodes. Small signals diode model. Zener diode. Rectifier circuits.
  2. Bipolar junction transistors (BJT). Transistor operation modes and characteristics. Polarization. Small signal models. Transistor amplifier circuits. The common-emitter. The common-base. The common-collector. Differential pairs. Current sources. Multi-stage amplifiers.
  3. Field effect transistors (MOSFET and JFET). Current-voltage characteristics. Biasing. Small signal models. Amplifier circuits.
  4. Basic logic circuits. Gates NAND, NOR and NOT using CMOS technology.
  5. The ideal operational amplifier. Circuit analysis with operational amplifiers. Non-ideal characteristics of operational amplifiers.

Teaching method

The theoretical concepts of the course syllabus are explained in the theoretical-practical classes and then the application of these concepts is clarified through exercises and practical examples of circuits.

 Resolution of sets of problems, available in the web page of the course, before the classes. Laboratorial classes with preparation in advance and report done by the students. Final project.

 Continuous assessment. In practical classes, laboratory work with writing report, three tests or final exam.
