Objectives

  • Acquisition of knowledge about the constitution and function of the Immune System.
  • Acquisition of basic knowledge about the mechanisms of immune response, in the different steps of the immune response.
  • Learning the molecular basis and mechanisms of antigen recognition and leukocyte activation
  • Introduction of knowledge on the role of immune dysfunction in autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiencies.
  • Development of skills on the applicability of methodologies / technologies used in the study of Immunology in different areas, such as, basic research, diagnosis and new therapies
  • Understanding the dynamics of knowledge contained in a rapidly developing science that integrates in all other biomedical sciences.

Teaching method

The teaching of this course comprehends mostly theoretical and theoretical- practical lectures. Per day, there will be 2 hours of theoretical lectures on topics of immunology, which are then complemented with theoretical-practical sessions related to this theme and consist of group presentations of scientific articles and seminars. For each class there will exist questionnaires of rapid response, to be discussed in the group at the beginning of the next topic.

Evaluation method

The student will be evaluated according to the weighted average of: 1) a written examination (50% weighting) which will include the themes explored in all classes, themes from the student’s presentations; 2) presentation and discussion of themes suggested  by the responsible of the course (40% weighting); and 3) participation and attitude in all course (weighting 10%).

Every student enrolled must attend at least 75% of the practical classes.

In case of repeated discipline, the evaluation obtained by attendance of lectures and presentations is valid for two years.
