Objectives
Overview of a variety of condensed systems and a description of their symmetry in terms of order parameters for an understanding of the structures and phase transitions in systems found in nature.
Prerequisites
Statistical physics is an important requitite and is used and develloped throughout the course. The knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid state physics adquired during undergraduate or graduate studies is helpful.
Subject matter
1. Structure and scattering
Scattering theory; applications to liquids, crystalline solids and liquid crystals.
2. Mean -field theory
Landau theory; the Ising and n-vector models; applications.
3. Critical phenomena and the renormalization group
Critical exponents, universality and scaling; introduction to the renormalization group
4. Dynamics: correlation and response
Correlation functions, response functions and applications.
