Objectives
This course is an introductory approach to the concepts related to the design, development and management of spatial databases by providing a theoretical framework of reference and solving various practical exercises adapted to reality.
The main objectives of the course are:
1. Provide the fundamental concepts within the paradigm database, including the origins of this concept and its approach, its advantages and disadvantages, different data models currently available and generally followed phases in the design, implementation and management of a base data.
2. Enter the relational model, which is the most influential database model and more often used in current implementations.
3. Explain and illustrate the available methodologies for modeling and implementing a database, taking as practical reference the relational model. The approach includes a first part of the logical design of a database, including two techniques: Entity-Attribute-Relationship model and Standardization. The second part will focus on aspects of physical design.
4. Display the SQL (Structured Query Language) and its main instructions used in the creation, manipulation and interrogation of a relational database. To demonstrate the practical use of this language in Microsoft Access environment.
5. Enter the Spatial Data Bases taking into account their particularities, the way they fit in relation to previously developed targets and the latest developments in this field.
6. Addressing the ESRI geodatabase model and demonstrate the tasks associated with its creation, management and publishing in ArcGIS Desktop environment.
7. Provide a brief introduction to the relatively recent dynamics, spatial databases of open source (Open Source), through practical examples developed in PostgreSQL environment with spatial extension PostGIS, being also employed GIS software source code Quantum GIS open for access and viewing this type of spatial data storage medium
