Objectives

This first course in Microeconomics aims at:
-introducing the basic concepts of the course;
-familiarizing students with the kind of issues that Microeconomics deals with;
-introducing the student to the use of Microeconomics concepts in the analysis of economic reality.

The course will be based on both oral and graphical analysis.

Prerequisites

Subject matter

- Basic definitions - Modeling: basic concepts;
- Two examples: Production possibilities frontier, and absolute and comparative advantage;
- Supply and demand;
- Elasticity;
- Supply and demand in action;
- Consumer theory leading to the demand curve;
- Producer theory leading to the supply curve;
- Markets: Perfect competition and monopoly;
- General equilibrium and efficiency in the pure trade economy;
- Externalities and public goods.
