Objectives

This course introduces Masters students to the field of consumer and managerial decision making. The main focus is on the ability to a better understanding of the mechanisms, clues and limitations lying behind consumers and managers decisions.

The first learning goal understanding the key components and research approaches on decision making will be covered by the introduction chapter.

The second learning goal being able to explain the role and importance of decision making to management and describe and interpret distinct decision making theories will be covered by the introduction chapter and the rationality chapter. The third learning goal is understanding the factors that influence managers and consumers decision making process will be covered by all chapters.

The fourth learning goal understanding that the consumer and managerial decision making process is not always rational and is subject to biases and identifying the types of heuristics that managers and consumers can use to make simple judgments will be covered by all chapters. The fifth learning goal being able to demonstrate how managers could improve their decision making judgment capabilities will be covered by the improving decision making chapter.

The sixth learning goal being able to define fairness and ethics in decision making and identify some of the issues that arise from unethical or deviant behavior will be covered by the fairness and ethics in decision making chapter.

In the end, mastering the contents of all the chapters is compulsory for students, so as to achieve all the courses learning objectives in an integrated framework.

Students should also prepare for class discussions by reading the mandatory literature and doing the recommended exercises every week.

A. Final individual exam (40%) The final exam is mandatory. Students must obtain a minimum grade of 9.5/20 to pass. Students are not allowed to consult reading materials.

B. Group assignment (50%) Group work on a specific DM topic. Students should form groups of 3‐4 people, hand in a written report and deliver an oral presentation.

C. Individual assignments and class participation (10%) A set of short exercises and questions related to topics discussed during the classes.
