Objectives

Provide basic training necessary to :

1. Understand the main determinants of health issues and the relationship between health and political, social and economic , particularly in countries with limited resources.

2. Ensure a base from which students can build their own curriculum in Global Health , with existing courses and resources offered by Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

3. Frame the unit's teaching activities in a perspective of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health.

Subject matter

1. Introduction to Global Health

Introduction to key concepts and principles governing the practice of global health (emphasis on countries with limited resources.

2. Global Mental Health

Analysis of key epidemiological data on the burden of mental, neurological and substance abuse.

3. Role of Noncommunicable Diseases in Global Health

Discussion on the current situation of noncommunicable diseases and present a guide to action to reverse the existing epidemic

4. Principles, scope and definition of Health Diplomacy: the example of the Global Strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol

Introduction to key concepts and principles governing the Health Diplomacy, new discipline that bridges the gap between policy and public health

5. The concept of Essential Medicines

The seminar will define the concept of Essential Drugs and discuss its role in improving the quality

6. Complex Emergencies and its effects on the mental health of the population

Teaching method

The Curricular Unit will be taught through two different methods:

a) Formal presentation by the teacher

b) Plenary discussions on specific and controversial topics

Each topic will be introduced by a formal power point presentation. This presentation will be posted in moodle platform together with relevant scientific articles. During and after the presentation a plenary discussion on controversial topics will be encouraged.

Evaluation method

Attendance to a minimum of 4 out of 6 Seminars will be mandatory to be admitted to the exam. The assessment of students is made through a Written Examination. The assessment and evaluation of the learning will be done through a multi-choice questionnaire related to a set of 300 slides posted in the moodle.
