Objectives

The main purpose of this optional curricular unit is to provide additional cardiology knowledge to basic curricular program, allowing a generic overview of clinical diagnostic and therapeutic pathways with a special focus on interventional cardiology techniques (coronary and structural), pacing, invasive arrhythmology and implantable cardio defibrillator devices (ICDs).

In order to acquire competence to refer patients to high differentiation centers a comprehensive overview of clinical pathways will be provided beginning with hospital admission, discussing therapeutic interventions available and accompanying intensive care, until discharge.

Prerequisites

Subject matter

Clinical practice with special focus in indications, limitations and clinical impact of interventional cardiology and invasive arrhythmology techniques review, namely:

·        Percutaneous primary coronary angioplasty in acute myocardial infarction

·        Percutaneous coronary angioplasty in stable angina Angioplastia coronária percutânea no tratamento da angina estável

·        Percutaneous aortic valve implantation in aortic stenosis.

·        Percutaneous IAD shunt closureEncerramento percutâneo de shunts (comunicações interauriculares) no adulto

·        Percutaneous “Patent Foramen Ovale ” closure, preventing recurrent stroke

·        Ablation therapy in atrial fibrillation and atrial tachycardias

·        Pacing and implantable cardioversor devices

Teaching method

The curricular unit involves basically cardiology clinical practice with direct contact with patients admitted in a cardiology department and theoretical-practical lessons (6 hours) according with an interactive teaching model. Individual participation and involvement will be promoted considering the limited students number.

Clinical activities will be oriented by cardiology clinical staff (invited assistants) that will provided an individual evaluation based in effective presences and participation level registered in “log book”.
