Objectives

1. Distinguish between scientific and non-scientific literature and recognize the value of periodical medical journals in the dissemination of biomedical scientific articles.

2. Describe the types of articles published in periodical medical journals, their purpose, structure and their individual sections.

3. Prepare appropriately a manuscript to be submitted in a periodical medical journal.

4. Conduct efficiently the interaction with editors and reviewers during the peer review process leading to a final publication.

 

Prerequisites

 

Subject matter

1. Types of medical manuscripts. The periodical medical journals. Function of the periodical medical journals. Reasons and motivations for publishing.

2. Types of scientific articles in periodical medical journals.

3. Structure of scientific papers. The IMRAD structure. Title and summary of scientific papers.

4. Authorship of scientific papers. Ethics in scientific publication. Style and grammar.

5. References and bibliography.

6. The writing of the manuscripts. ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals.

7. Review of the scientific articles: the submission process and peer review.

8. Bibliometrics.

Teaching method

The curricular unit will take place on 2nd semester, from February 22 to June 3. It is designed with a b-learning (blended learning) structure, with classroom activities and activities conducted via the Moodle platform of the Nova Medical School. The latter include lectures, readings, homework, participation in a discussion forum, quizzes, practical training and assessment tests. E-learning activities can be performed in a flexible schedule, thus students can easily balance the frequency of this curricular unit with other academic activities that may take place during the same period.
