Objectives

Aknowledge normal anatomy, function and development of respiratory system in pediatric patients of different ages (infant, toddler, children and adolescents)

Understand functional and structural differences between children and adults,concerning respiratory system. Become aware of the way these are modified by, growing, development, physical and physiological maturation, as well as environment factors.

Diagnose most frequent respiratory diseases in children and adolescents.

Request and interpret supplementary diagnostic tests (respiratory function tests, polysomnography, bronchoscopy, imagiological exams), according to their clinical relevance. Understand indications, advantages, limitations and possible interpretation faults of each exam.

Recommend and prescirbe appropriate therapies to acute or chronic respiratory disease, cautiously using drugs, rehabilitation techniques, oxygen and ventilatory support.

Select, interpret and evaluate scientific literature in pediatric pulmonology.

Prerequisites

 

Subject matter

Structure and function of the respiratory system, congenital anomalies, clinical evaluation, respiratory function, bronchoscopy, imagiology, infections, tuberculosis, asthma and wheezing syndromes, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, cystic fibrosis, aspirative syndromes, restrictive diseases, pleural and thoracic wall disorders, sleep and respiratory disease, sport and rehabilitation, inhalatory therapies.
