Education objectives
The achievement of MA in History of the Portuguese Empire involves the acquisition of the following
knowledge and skills:
- To provide scientific and academic training in the History of the Portuguese Expansion;
- To deepen the scientific and academic training in the comparative histories of the colonial empires;
- To apply a trans-disciplinary methodology which is innovative in Global History;
- To develop the necessary skills for the pursuit of future in-depth study;
- To enhance internationalisation of academic and scientific activities with research networks in the European
space, the Community of Portuguese-speaking countries and other regions, particularly in those with intensive
contacts with Portuguese expansion or who today have sizeable Portuguese-speaking immigrant communities.
- To write scientific texts on Portuguese Expansion within the theoretical framework of global history.
Access conditions
1) As provided in paragraph 1, article 17 of Decree-Law No. 74/2006 and republished by Decree-Law No. 115/2013. 2) Applicants meeting the requirements of academic and curricular expressed in paragraph 1 of this Article shall be selected taking into account the following criteria: a) degree classification; b) academic and scientific curriculum; c) Professional curriculum; d) Possible interview
Degree pre-requisites
Duration: 2 years/4 semesters
Total credits: 120 credits (60 credits from curricular units + 60 credits from the non-teaching component)
Non-teaching component modes: Dissertation.
The student performs 60 credits in all the curricular units offered.
In the 3rd semester the student must perform the Seminar Writing History (5 ECTS).
Access to other courses
Access to study programmes leading to a doctoral degree.
Evaluation rules
The final evaluation of each curricular unit may involve the presentation of a practical system for blended learning (and may have recourse to videoconference or other systems that allow synchronous contact between faculty / graduate student). The defense of the dissertation is made in person at FCSH/NOVA. Videoconferencing could be used as alternative for , since there is an agreement of cooperation between university´s home country with FCSH/NOVA and/or Centre for Overseas History (CHAM) or also with consular offices of Portugal. A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the post-graduate diploma. The final grade of the post-graduate diploma is the average, by credit, of the grades obtained in the course units in which the student obtained the 60 credits from the taught part of the Masters course. A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the Masters degree. The final grade of the Masters degree will be the average of the final grade of the taught part of the course, weighted to 40%, and the grade awarded to the dissertation, project work or practical work experience report, weighted to 60%.
