Objectives

1. To understand the concept of Visual Culture in its relationship with other cultural fields, as visual studies or cultural studies, as well as its cross-cutting edges with different human sciences;
2. To acknowledge and be able to analyze paradigmatic case studies of the crossing between Art and Visual Culture;
3. To learn visual literacy, in the sense of adquiring a critical thinking about images and their making;
4. To learn the key concepts of Visual Culture and to be able of aplying them;
5. To acknowledge and to be able of interpreting models of visual representation in its intertwining of conceptual and communicional models;
6. To be able of recognize and analize its own visual ecology/ culture;

Subject matter

2.1. The renaissance visual culture, The arguments of Panofski, Michael Baxandall e Clifford Geertz.
2.2. The modern otpical culture and the emergence of the new observer. Concepts of attention and visuality (Jonathan Crary and Nicholas Mirzoeff).
2.3. Photography, cinema and xx century visual culture. The Hollywood movie industry. Problems of gender and cinema (Laura Mulvey), cinema of attractions (Tom Gunning) and fetichism (Christian Metz).
3. Contemproary visual culture
3.1. The role of Museums in contemproary culture (Claire Bishop)
3.2. Archeology of digital culture and of the proliferation of imagens in the networks (Marita Sturken).
