Objectives
a) To acquire methodological, terminological, conceptual and research-related skills in the study area;
b) To acquire the ability to critically discuss texts and issues related to the study field;
c) To master various methodological models in the area of musicology;
d) To cultivate critical judgement in regard of different forms of presentation and communication of research results in musicology.

Subject matter
A study of the Portuguese musical repertoire in the period 1890-1960: cultural-historical, analytical and aesthetic approaches.
There will be a selection of works representative of various musical idioms and aesthetic orientations, with the aim to foster the understanding of sociocultural phenomena on the basis of in-depth case studies. The objective is to cut across different areas and disciplines within the Curso de Licenciatura, in order to approach various musical objects and phenomena from different angles, as well as developing observation, description and interpretation skills.
Special attention will be given to the integration of musical currents in the period under study within the general framework of European and non-European music.

Teaching method
In class teaching. A combination of theoretical exposition, discussion, set readings and practical assignments. Audio illustrations and individual presentations.
Evaluation method
Individual presentations (30%) and written essay (70%). Presence and active participation in the class are taken into account in the overall assessment.
