Objectives
a) To reflect critically on the concepts of Traditional Literature and Popular Literature.
b) To put in perspective the diversity and specificity of genres of traditional poetry and narrative.
c) To critically analyze novelist texts, ballads (cancioneiro and romanceiro) and proverbs in the light of the history, form and theme of genders.
Prerequisites
None.
Subject matter
1. The Traditional Literature and Popular Literature concepts.
2. Major genders of traditional literature: the novelistic, the liric and the epic-liric ballads (cancioneiro and romanceiro) and the paremiology.
2.1. Texts collections of the Portuguese modern tradition
2.2. Old testimonials and references
2.3. The limits and the relationship of the genders: the form, the poetic, the themes and the language.

Teaching method
The methodology will be theoretical: it will demand the presentation of arguments and critical analysis in what concerns the students. The professor will lecture on theoretical issues and accompany the works developed by the students.
Evaluation method
The students evaluation will result from their class participation, especially through the presentation and the discussion of the work carried out throughout the academic year (50%), and a final frequency (50%).
