Objectives
General objectives:
The goal of this semester, a natural sequence of Latin I, consists on creating appropriate skills for the understanding and translation of texts of epigraphy (inscriptions of Hispania) and Latin authors of increasing difficulty.
Specific objectives:
a) To deepen knowledge of the Latin language in order to provide the understanding and translation and of simple texts written in this language. (45%)
b) To develop productive competence in Latin allowing the use of lexical, morphological and syntactic in order to produce simple phrases. (15%)
c) To develop the connections between Latin and the Romance languages, particularly Portuguese, concerning both the fundamental lexicon and some morphological and syntactic structures. (10%)
d) To develop techniques and methods of textual analysis leading to the version of Latin into Portuguese. (15%)
e) To acquire a minimum of history and Roman civilization knowledge which permit the understanding of the analyzed texts. (10%)

Subject matter
1- Linguistic aspects:
e) Phonetic: consolidation of the study of phonetic phenomena: apophony, vowel assimilation, apocope.
f) Morphology: the nominal inflection: adjectives and their degrees, pronouns and numerals; verbal flexion: notions of aspect and voice; the opposition infectum/perfectum; conclusion of the study of regular verbal flexion in the perfectum theme both in active and passive voices, and the verb sum; the formation of the theme of supine; deponent and semi-deponent verbs; adverbs and their degrees; the subordinate conjunctions.
g) Syntax: Circumstantial complements (systematization) and the passive agent; the ablative absolute; Circumstantial clauses: temporal, causal, comparative, final, consecutive, concessive sentences; infinitive completive clauses.
2- Lexicology and semantics: the primitive background of Latin vocabulary; the families of words.
3- Analysis and commented translation of proverbs, maxims and simple texts of Latin authors.

Teaching method
The unit has have an eminently theoretical-practical nature. A direct learning method with a progressive approach will be used. Morphology, phonetic and syntax subjects are presented in a gradual way by the teacher. After each expositive lecture are carried through practical exercises in classroom. 1 weekly hour guided by the teacher is dedicated to the techniques of translation of Latin authors texts of increasing difficulty and to the use of the dictionary. The weekly homework (with obligatory deliver of 50%) as well as the interpellation during classes allow the student to verify his difficulties and make possible a continuous feed-back, in order to adjust learning to the profile of the class.
Evaluation method
A system of continuous EVALUATION without final exams (except students protected from some special regime) will be adopted. The participation in classes, the homework quality (35%), the results of 2 frequencies (50%) and the attendance (15%) shall be taken into account.
