Objectives

a) To know the French romanticism, relating it with the equivalent movements of other literatures and European cultures;
b) To identify some characteristic features of early modernity;
c) be able to articulate the programmatic texts of the time with literary analysis;
d) have critical capacity to analyze the theoretical thinking, knowing articulate some concepts with the reading of the works studied in the program.

Subject matter

General theme: From Rousseau to Proust: the modernity of French Romanticism
1. The pre-Romanticism in France and Europe in general. prevailing aesthetic trends: Rousseau and Madame de .Staël.
2.The first romantic generation: Chateaubriand and Lamartine.
3.The transition to Symbolism: Victor Hugo, Nerval, Baudelaire.
4.Proust and the heritage of Romanticism and Modernity.

Teaching method

Lectures: 60%; Seminars: 40%.
Theoretical analysis on the different points of the programme. Close reading of texts with students. Tutorial guidance, with a view to preparing research work.
In class teaching

Evaluation method

Two written tests, one in the middle and one at the end of the class period (80%). Attendance and participation in practical classes (20%).
