Objectives

At the end of the course students should: 1) understand the specificity of the object of Phonetics and its place within the framework of Linguistics; 2) understand the abstract nature of the phonetic segment in view of the linguistic productions of speakers; 3) understand the structure of the vocal tract and the operation of its basic components; 4) master the basics of articulatory classification of segments; 5) be able to describe phonetic segments from a reduced grid articulation parameters; 6) know how to classify phonetic segments with normalized articulation labels; 7) dominate general criteria for phonetic transcription with the International Phonetic Alphabet; 8) know the phonetic inventory of standard European Portuguese; 9) know the bases of a system of phonetic features for encoding phonetic information in a phonological description; 10) understand the basics of Acoustics and the foundations of spectrographic analysis of speech sounds.

Subject matter

1. The speech chain and the concept of segment.
2. Overview of the supralaryngeal vocal tract and its functioning.
3. General parameters for phonetic taxonomy and its linguistic relevance.
4. General principles of phonetic transcription according to the conventions and recommendations of the International Phonetic Association (IPA).
5. Description of segmental phonetics of European Portuguese - phonetic inventory and practice of phonetic transcription.
6. Introduction to the theory of distinctive features.
7. Acoustic Phonetics: basics of Acoustics and the acoustic theory of speech production.

Teaching method

- Classes: masterful presentation of program content, with unrestricted possibility of student participation.
- Bibliographic support: class summaries, support documents, slides used in class, links, full texts of articles and book chapters, discussion forum available on-line in the MOODLE platform.
- Supervision: discussion sessions, one-on-one tutorials, response to students´ queries by e-mail, e-messaging or video conferencing.

Evaluation method

- Grading: 1 exam with 4 questions chosen from a set of ca. 20; optional text-commentary assignment, 25% or 30% of the final grade; optional essay (1-2 printed pages) about a topic covered in class, 5% or 10% of the final grade; optional planned presentation 15-20 minutes, 10% or 15% of the final grade; the weighting of these elements depends on the grades obtained (i.e. less than 15 points or 15+ points).
