Objectives
1. Acquire a good understanding of the conceptual framework of National Security and Defence and its relevance as a public policy;
2. Acquire a good knowledge of the normative and constitutional framework of National Security and Defence;
3. Promote the ability to engage in multidisciplinary and multidimensional analysis of National Security and Defence in a national, bilateral and multilateral framework in the context of international organization of which Portugal is a member;
4. Acquire a good understanding of the notion of integrated security and a good knowledge of the State institutions that are part of the National Security system;
5. Acquire a good understanding of the procedures of National Defence Strategic Planning, strategic decision-making and intervening organs;
6. Acquire a good knowledge of the theories of Defence economics and the determining factors of Defence expenditure, as well as of Defence Industry and Technological Basis.

Teaching method
Lectures by the professors responsible for the course and expert guest speakers; guided discussion.
Evaluation method
Participation and oral presentations during class will allow us to evaluate the capability to think, debate and present a point and will count 25% of the final course mark. The final written essay (with no less than 3500 and no more than 5500 words) will allow us to evaluate the ability of the students in terms of research and critical analysis and will count 25% of the final course mark.
