Objectives

To define and to discuss the concepts of modern literature, contemporary literature, and classical literature.

To study some Portuguese authors in their dialogs between the classic and the contemporary: from Cesário Verde to Fernando Pessoa; from Cesário to Cesariny, Sophia, Nuno Júdice, Paulo José de Miranda and other contemporary poets. To study «Viagem à Índia» from Gonçalo M. Tavares and its dialogs with Camões, Homero and James Joyce.

From the analysis of these classic and contemporary texts, to develop the critical capabilities required to students to reflect on and to research the contemporary, not only as a historical category, but also as an aesthetic one.

Teaching method

To present and to question theoretical concepts. Analysis of texts. Oral discussion of some aspects and themes of the texts.

Evaluation method

Written essay (20 pages) based on an individual research supervised by the teacher.
