Objectives
a)Developing skills and knowledge regarding Iberian literatures, from a Comparative perspective.
b)Acquiring deeper knowledge of historical, social, artistic and literary contexts at national, Iberian and European levels.
c)Acquiring critical and theoretical knowledge necessary to a comparative analysis: useful concepts from History of Literature, History of Culture, Literary Theory, Literary Criticism and Comparative Literature.
d)Introducing a comparative geopolitical and geo-cultural view into historiographical knowledge of Literature.
e)Strengthening methodological skills in order to plan and implement research projects.
f)Developing critical reading skills of proposed texts in order to write a personal essay.
g)Writing textual analysis essays, applying acquired knowledge.
h)Getting to know critical bibliography about studied subjects.
Prerequisites
Medium knowledge of Spanish.
Subject matter
Fears and Secrets between Two Eras
Our study of the selected corpus will be focused on the idea of secret. In fact, literature covers and uncovers, seducing and provoking readers. In a cultural space composed by complex unities and multiplicities, we will analyse, using a comparative perspective, how Iberian literatures have reacted to the transition between dictatorship and democracy and to the secret fears of these two eras.
1.Historical and literary introduction and also a provocation: Somos Todos Hispanos (Natália Correia).
2.Fears, omens and conspiracies: from the well-kept secret of Balada da Praia dos Cães (José Cardoso Pires) to the ill-kept secret of El dueño del secreto (Antonio Muñoz Molina).
3.Secrets and fears of life in liberty: personal disillusionment in A Morte de Carlos Gardel (António Lobo Antunes) and Corazón tan blanco (Javier Marías).
4.The secret question: who are we? Case study: Andaluzian Catalans in El amante Bilingüe (Juan Marsé).

Teaching method
Presentation of the various topics by the lecturer; reading and discussion of a selection of texts covering the topics outlined in the syllabus;
Tutorial supervision of the research work related to the final paper chosen by the student.
Evaluation method
1-Oral presentations, seminars, readings and research results on the objectives of the seminar and its group discussion (40%); 2- written and oral discussion of a final work, individual, including bibliography (12-15 pages), guided by the teacher (60%).
