Objectives

To enhance students’ knowledge in the area of Literary Translation by the consideration of the major issues at stake.
To develop the ability to carry out academic research in the area of Translation Studies and Literary Translation.
To develop a critical awareness of interpretation and textual analysis, and wider issues involved in producing literary text translations.
To develop translational competence through the practice of translation, considering different literary genres and subgenres.
To acquire strategies for translation problems in different types of texts and contexts.
To be able to capture and render the style of the source text in the translation process.
To develop theoretical and critical thinking and evaluatory skills and insights on literary translation both as a process and as a result.
To acquire important skills, such as carrying out academic written work and oral presentations, improving analytical thought, and better use of electronic resources.

Prerequisites

Fluency in Portuguese and English languages.

Subject matter

Literary and non-literary texts in a translation context: specificity of the literary text.
Literary Translation as cultural mediation: the role of translation in a globalized world and the ethics of translation.
Reception of literary translation: the status of the translator and translation as (re)writing.
Translation of texts from different literary genres and subgenres: translation as process and product.
Source language cultural context and selection of adequate criteria for expression in the target language cultural context: linguistic, stylistic, pragmatic and cultural issues.
Practical analysis of specific problems raised by literary translation from English to Portuguese.
Identification and resolution of recurrent problems related to cultural references and linguistic and extralinguistic factors.
Evaluating different translations of the same source text: comparative analysis.
Approaching international projects between universities to support literary translation studies.

Evaluation method

Assessment will focus on two main areas: 1) assiduity, participation in classwork and contribution towards teambuilding, limited written assignments and practical tests; 2) production of a written research paper organized as a hypothetical future thesis or report and eventually complemented by previous oral presentation and discussion.
