Objectives
At the end of the semester students should be able to:
- recognize the basic cultural features of the Classical world
- recognize the most important works of art and architecture of the Classical world and the basics of their production contexts
- distinguish the production of the different chronologies and geographies discussed in this course
- produce an oral and written discourse on the subjects of the syllabus that is articulate, informed and supported by specialized vocabulary
- know and understad the essencials of the pertinent historiography

Subject matter
Greek Art
1. Mediterranean antecedents. Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations.
2. Architecture. Archaic, classical and Hellenistic periods. Types of buildings and Classical orders.
3. Sculpture. Kouroi and korai; great classical sculpture; the tension of Hellenistic sculpture.
4. Ceramics. Geometric style, red and black figures.
Roman Art
1. Urbanism. Military models, cardus and decumanus, forum.
2. Architecture. Arch, vault, dome. Public buildings (theaters, arenae, temples, thermae, aqueducts). The Roman house. Triumphal arches.
3. Sculpture. Portrait between Republic and Empire. Narrative sculpture and great monuments.
4. Painting. Mosaics. Pompeii: perspective and narration. Domus Aurea and grotheschi.
The Rediscovery of Classical Art
1. Renaissance. Vitruvius, Rome and the reconstruction of the eternal City. Antique sculpture.

Teaching method
Lecturing and class discussions are complemented by the recommended bibliography. Supplementary materials will be provided. Powerpoints and other materials are made available on moodle. Fieldtrips will be organized.

Evaluation method
Students are graded on the basis of a midterm (20%), a final exam (40%), a short paper (30%) and class participation (10%). All grading elements are mandatory. Late papers will be penalized and may not be accepted.
