Objectives
At the end of the semester students should be able to:
- Know the milestones in the history of museums;
- To critically describe the main functions of the museums in relation to conservation, research; exhibition and communication;
- To produce an oral and written discourse on the subjects of the syllabus that is articulate, informed and supported by specialized vocabulary;
- To know and understad the essencials of the pertinent historiography.

Subject matter
1. The origin of the museums: the appeal of collecting. The history of the European museums: from treasures to the museums of the Renaissance and the Cabinets of Curiosities. The museums open to the public: enhancing the social role of museums; the nineteenth-century museums.
2. The renewal of museology in the twentieth century: modernity marks and postmodernism crisis. Extension of the museum concept and the new museology.
3. Museology and museography: from the inventory to the documentation systems; from preventive conservation to restoration; storage, permanent collection, temporary exhibitions. Museum architectures; management and communication in museums; the careers of museology and museography.

Teaching method
Lecturing and class discussions are complemented by the recommended bibliography. Supplementary materials will be provided. Fieldtrips will be organized.
In class teaching
Evaluation method
Students are graded on the basis of a midterm (20%), a final exam (40%), a short paper about one of the fieldtrips (20%) and class participation (20%. Students must attend at least to 80% of classes given). All grading elements are mandatory. Late papers will be penalized and may not be accepted.
