Objectives

To recognize the relevance of Artistic Heritage in the global understanding of current concepts, theories and practices;
To get acquainted with facts, personalities and legal requirements founders of the History of Artistic Heritage from Antiquity to 21st century;
To grasp the symbolical value of the appropriation of Artistic Heritage in situations of political, economical and/or cultural dominance;
To critically assay the subject’s essential documents as Charters and all relevant legislation, both national and international;
To master the fundamental stages of action towards safeguard and preservation of Artistic Heritage, from virtual diagnose and non-intrusive techniques to minimalistic and reversible intervention;
To critically acknowledge a range of situations concerning the safeguard and appreciation of Artistic Heritage currently taking place;
To understand the diversity of virtual resources/recreation for the public fruition of Artistic Heritage, namely via cultural tourism.

1 - The history of the concept of Heritage:
1.1 - The concept of Heritage from Antiquity to the Middle Ages
1.2 - The concept of Heritage on the birth of Italian Renaissance Humanism
1.3 - From Encyclopedia to the Nationalisms
1.4 - Romanticism and Positivism in the 19th century
1.5 - Artistic Heritage today: rapports with Culture, Landscape and Identity (possession and the Nation-States)
2 - Artistic Heritage and safeguard and protection mechanisms, legal and diplomatic, on national and international levels:
2.1 - Legal mechanisms on several Nations for its inventory, listing and protection
2.2 - The Portuguese example
3 - The complex question of Conservation and/against Restoration with priority to inventory and study: the role of the art historian
4 - Artistic Heritage as a common asset and a social and economic development opportunity: public v. private and Cultural Tourism

Teaching method

Theoretical-practical classes including presentation of slides, maps, plans, recreations and other graphic materials related to the subject, encompassing the reading and discussion of texts of primordial relevance, enlisting the cooperation of reputed experts - in areas such as Heritage Management, Cultural Tourism and new technologies applied to Artistic Heritage - and related field trips to monuments with significant restoration interventions as the Jerónimos or Lisbon cathedral.

Evaluation method

Reading record of an essential text on artistic Heritage (special rules, defined in the evaluation criteria document apply) (15%)
Written paper analyzing a Heritage subject, maximum 10 pages of text + images and documents with no page limit (45%)
Written image or text commentary in class, 30 minutes (15%)
Written test with bibliographical consultation, comprehensively answering 2 of 3 given questions (25%) [possible exemption if the average marks of the other 3 evaluation elements equals or exceeds 14/20]
