Objectives

a) To identify the diachronic evolution of Latin Literature.

b) To recognize the significant role of some authors in the history of Literature in Rome.

c) To analyze some significant texts from the works of these authors.

d)To identify the classical heritage in European literature, especially in the Portuguese literature.

e) To report orally and in writing the acquired knowledge with accuracy and coherent argumentation.

Subject matter

1. Background and periodization of Latin literature.

2. The origins and the first authors. Plautus.

3. The Hellenization. The circle of Scipio. Lucilius.

4. The eloquence. Cicero.

5. The lyric poetry. The poetae novi. Catullus.

6. The historiography. Sallust and Livy.

7. The epic, elegiac and didactic poetry . Virgil, Ovid and Horace.

8. The imperial age. Seneca, Martial, Tacitus, Apuleius.

Evaluation method

The final evaluation will be based on the average grade between an individual essay and a final test, counting each one 50%.
