Objectives

The general purpose is the acquisition of knowledge which may enhance 1) the awareness of the importance of usability and accessiblity for the interactive practices and satisfaction of users, namely on the web and 2) a critical perspective of these issues based on theoretical grounds and best practices.
Students should end the course with skills that allowed them to:
1) identify and understand the evolution of human-computer interfaces 2) identify and describe the most common features of graphical user interfaces 3) identify and describe the needs and limitations of web oriented interfaces 4) understand the growing demand for guidelines and standards on interaction protocols 5) be able to apply basic evaluation and testing methods of usability and accessibility

Prerequisites

n.a.

Subject matter

Three main dimensios of study; 1) Foundations of usability - the Human-Computer Interaction contributions and the actual standards 2)the question of accessibility and the guidelines of W3C - World Wide Web Consostium 3) Evaluation and testing tools
Specific content:
1. Human-computer interfaces
a. From pimitive interfaces to graphical user interfaces (GUIs)
2. Paradigms of graphical interfaces. Styles of interaction.
a. Classical paradigms, i.e. the desktop metaphor(s).
c. Other paradigms: 3D interfaces, tangible interfaces, etc.
3. What is usability? Rules and guidelines. How to ensure usability. Evaluation and testing methods.
4. What is accessibility? How to evaluate? The importance of the Design for all.
5. The movement towards standardization
a. Internationalization and localization
6. The importance of cultural context and diversity

Teaching method

Presentation of contents that allow a critical understanding of the main concepts; critical reading and group discussion; brainstorming moments in class. The focus is to provide the ability to apply an articulated approach of the models and concepts involved. The teaching method is: 1) expository with the mandatory participation of students (60%), 2) practical work and team work, and group discussion with specific students contributions (40%).
In class teaching.

Evaluation method

1) Active participion and contribution on class and three small works (one of them team work) with oral presentation (40%), 2) A final individual and writen paper (5000 words), oral presentation and discussion (60%)
