Objectives
a) To discuss some key factors of poverty as a phenomenon, especially the aging population;
b) To transmit a body of knowledge about basic concepts and methods of analysis of poverty;
c) To discuss the role of Global, European and national anti-poverty and exclusion policies;
d) To be able to analyze the global geography of poverty and exclusion;
e) To be able to analyze the role of public and private institutions, cooperatives and volunteering in combating poverty and exclusion;
f) To be able to analyze case studies, highlighting the examples of the United Nations, the European Union and Portugal;
g) To develop future scenarios for reducing poverty and exclusion

Subject matter
The course syllabus develops the curricular unit´s objectives accordingly to the following table:

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical classes. The students have several opportunities to participate in the discussions during classes.
The classes include explanation of techniques and its application to problems defined in the theoretical component.
Evaluation method
- Reading of selected references with the interpretation and comprehension of these selected references that will be tested on a writing exam [50%];
- Participation in a working group, which carries out the practical application of contents analyzed in the theoretical component of the course (15-20 pag) [50%].
