Objectives
Students are expected to develop the following competences:
an in-depth knowledge of the most relevant and up-to-date theoretical debates in the field of historical studies;
ability to choose a field of expertise and to plan and conduct the work inherent to this course, as well as to use such competences in her/his own personal research;
ability to be intellectually creative in the development of scientific ideas and the answering to the main research questions;
ability to take advantage of the main funding opportunities for collaborative research, at the international level, in the field of the social sciences and the humanities;
ability to contribute to the advancement of knowledge through her/his research.

Evaluation method
1. Each student will write:
1.1. Three reports of conferences held within the activities of IEM, CHAM or IHC (two of them by non-Lusophone speakers).
1.2. A research paper on the core theoretical challenges of the doctoral research due to be conducted.
2. Each report will have 7.000-8.000 characters, including spaces and footnotes.
3. The research paper will have 30.000-40.000 characters, including spaces and footnotes, but excluding the bibliography.
4. The reports and the research paper must be submitted to the instructors of this doctoral course, via email until 2nd January 2017, and in hard copy at the secretariat of the History Department until 3rd January 2017.
5. The research paper will account for 80% of the final grade. The three reports will account for the remaining 20% of the final grade.
