Objectives

Introduce students to several integrated modelling concepts and approaches and its application to environmental and sustainability assessment processes. Students will acquire the following competencies:
-Understanding of integrated modelling concepts and tools;
-Capacity to critically assess and combine two or several modelling approaches and tools;
-Ability to judge issues and values associated with different combinations of models in a system dynamics perspective;
-Understanding the role that integrated modelling can play and capacity to apply methods and tools for participatory policy formulation and appraisal;
-Communication skills and conducting autonomous research.

Subject matter

Introduction – Integrated modelling concepts and framework. Principles and good practices. Dimensions of integration (Parts A, B, C).

Part A – Modeling with stakeholders
Public and stakeholder participation in environmental and sustainability decisions
System dynamics based approaches, methods and tools
Participatory Systems Mapping workshop

Part B – Tools for integrated assessments
Conceptual design and tools for problem structuring. Post-normal science. Uncertainty and complexity
Scenarios and visioning in integrated assessment and modeling
