Objectives

The main objectives are:

*expose students to some  themes of Biomedical Engineering that are not covered in the other UC programs;

*identify and describe some application areas of Biomedical Engineering;

*develop the ability to integrate knowledge and skills acquired during the course, analysis and proposal for solving a problem in the area of Biomedical Engineering;

*identify problems in the clinical setting.

Prerequisites

Not applicable.

Subject matter

In the theoretical part:

Every week there will be seminars given by internal professors to the FCT and external guests to the institution, who will present current issues which have not been discussed in other UC or which may be extensions of these.

In the practical part:

  At the beginning of the course students will have to choose one of the themes proposed to develop a project, which is made up of problems / challenges focused on each of the areas that make up the course profiles.

Each theme is associated with a service of a health care institution (hospital, clinic, ...). The theme is chosen based on a partnership between the heads of the course and the clinical trials of these services.

Students to identify better the problem will perform three visits to the service, allowing a better contextualization of this problem. These visits, as well as the identification of problems, will be supported by a short descriptive script.

The development project will be supported by the UC team, and by external tutors with practical knowledge of the proposed problems that are part of clinical teams where students will perform the visits.

Teaching method

In the classes of the course the following methodologies will be applied:

*Expository and demonstrative;
*Solving Problems with discussion;

*Group work with presentation in the classroom;
