Objectives
Provide students with knowledge in design of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Students should acquire the following skills:
• Capacity in estimating design flows
• Capacity of knowledge of materials and accessories supplies used
• Capacity in the hydraulic calculation of flows in networks
• Capacity of knowledge and characterization of the components of the networks
• Capacity in more sustainable ways of managing networks
• Capacity of designing the different organs of the systems
Prerequisites
The curricular unit does not have any formal pre-requisites although students should have knowledge in the fields of pressure and free-surface flow. Basic knowledge in the use of CAD software (ex: AutoCad) and use of spreadsheet programs (ex: Excel) is also considered relevant.
Subject matter
General basics of water supply systems, urban and industrial sewage systems and pluvial drainage systems: project horizon, phased project and construction; population evolution calculation, analitical methods of demographic components; estimation and calculation of capitations and specific consumption; peak factor and reduction factor, sewage flow and hydrology revision (pluvial flow calculations). Water supply system equipments: intake structures in surface and groundwater sources (types, conception and dimensioning); Water transport systems (gravitational and non-gravitational), general conception, design of water mains, technical and economical dimensioning of conduits; conception and dimensioning of elevatory systems (civil construction, equipments and electrical facilities); design and remote operation of water distribution and elevatory systems; water distribution reservatories design; water supply networks design; Drinking Water treatment basics. Sewage water and pluvial water drainage systems; types of systems, conception and dimensioning of conduits and elevatory systems. General notions on sewage water treatment.

Teaching method
Lectures: presentation of the concepts and correpondent implementation techniques in Urban
Hydraulics.
Labs: presentation and exemplification of techniques, instrumentation and informatic tools in Urban Hydraulics; accompaniment of lab exercises developed by the students.
Evaluation method
Two tests and four projects.
Tests aritmetic (T) mean shoud be > 9.5 out of 20
Prejects aritmetic mean shoud be > 9.5 out of 20
Final grade (FG) = 0.4 x (T1 + T2)/2 + 0.6 x (P1 + P2 + P3)/3
