Objectives
The objective of this course is to apply economic concepts and tools to the analysis of current issues of Education Policy. The course combines economic theory (at micro and macro level) with some econometrics and institutional literature to address education problems. Besides the theoretical and empirical analysis of the questions involved a particular attention will be devoted to policy issues. The emphasis of the course is on primary and secondary levels of education.

Teaching method
Each week the students are exposed to two lectures (1.5 hours each). Lectures are used to present and discuss economic theory and policy. Students are expected to actively participate in those discussions. All information on the course and the slides used in class will be posted on the moodle.Students are expected to look at these before class.
Evaluation method
-3 problem sets: to be done in teams of 2 or 3 students. These have a weight of 15% on the final grade. (Delivery dates:)
-1 Post and 1 comment on another student post on the Masters blog
http://novaworkboard.wordpress.com: the post must have a maximum of 500 words. It must be related to the topics discussed in the course, must be relevant and the opinions expressed should be well rooted on data, empirical or theoretical results.
The post and the comment should be delivered at the start of class in paper and introduced in the blog of the Masters after being revised. These have a weight of 15% on the final grade. (Delivery dates).
Oral presentation of a research paper: to be done in teams of 2 or 3 students. Students may express their preferences among a selection of papers which will be distributed. Taking preferences into account, a paper will be attributed to each group of students. Presentations will be done in the last two classes and should take 15 minutes each. This has a weight of 15% on the final grade. Final exam contributes to the final grade with a weight of 55%. The minimum grade is 8.
