Objectives

a) To acquire the capacity to identify and question the traditional aporiai of critique and translation
b) To acquire the capacity to recognize the fundamental relations between those aporiai and other aesthetic problems and concepts (e.g. meaning/ sign)
c) To acquire the capacity to analyze the conditions of the application and enlargement of those aporiai to the fields of literary studies and philosophy of art.
d) To acquire the capacity to understand the specificity of the problems of critique and translation within the context of philosophy (ontology, hermeneutics) and the social sciences (history, anthropology, linguistics, communication).

Subject matter

The seminar will be dedicated to “traces of the philosophy of the tragic in our modern critical vocabulary” (Leonard, 2015:5), with particular emphasis on Nietzsche’s and Walter Benjamin’s thought and the analysis of the Works, The Birth of Tragedy and The Origin of the Tragic German Drama. The seminar will include on Open Lecture in the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian with the curator Paulo Pires do Vale, in which the questions at stake will be debated in the light of the exhibition Num jardim feito de tinta. Ana Hatherly e o barroco.

Teaching method

(a) most classes are dialogued lectures, (b) several of them work as a \"seminar\" (with reading, commentary, and analyses of texts), (c) other classes (so-called \"practical\" classes) consist in critical discussions — with the students — of previously presented themes and problems.

Evaluation method

(d) students are evaluated by a mandatory 12 pages essay (70%); (e) students are also evaluated by an oral presentation of their essay (20%); (f) a positive participation in the classes is valued (10%).
