Objectives

Teach basic concepts related to the design, construction and maintenance of bridges, viaducts and special structures.

 

Prerequisites

It is assumed that the students have acquired the concepts taught previously in Strength of Materials I and II, Reinforced Concrete Structures I and II.

Subject matter

1. Introduction: overview of bridges and viaducts; constituent elements of bridges; historical review of bridge design and construction

2. Organization and constraints of bridge design: design stages; constituent parts of the projects; design constraints; actions; reviews of structural safety

3. General design of bridges: data for structural deployment; typical cross-sectional profiles of decks; structural design criteria; constructive methods of bridges

4. Design and methods of analysis and dimensioning of decks: deck types and their suitability for different situations; analysis in transversal direction; analysis in longitudinal direction

5. Design and methods of analysis and dimensioning of support elements: columns and columns stability; elastic connections of decks; structural bearings; abutments and retaining walls; foundations

6. Finishing details of pedestrian, road and railway bridges; transitional devices; protection devices
