Objectives

Students must acquire the knowledge of the composition, functioning, properties and limitations of the measurement apparatus used in Electrothecnics. Students will become able of executing measurement operations without jeopardizing people and equipments, and without introducing gross errors, and will become able to estimate, limit  or correct measurement errors.   Students must acquire the capacity of writing a complete, concise and precise technical-scientific report.

Subject matter

• Introduction to the Laboratory: Neutral, ground, and common; Electrical safety, electrocution, resuscitation.
• Introduction to metrology: definitions, standards, errors, measuring methods, gauging.
• Zeroing methods: potentiometer, bridges.
• Electronic modules for instrumentation: Operational Amplifiers and their circuits, Instrumentation and Insulation Amplifiers, Operational blocks, RMS/DC converters, filters, current sensors, PLL, Synchronous amplifiers.
• Sources and generators: Voltage stabilizers, commuted sources, function generators, impulse generators, and frequency synthesizers.
• Analog Measuring instruments: movement dynamics; moving coil, electrodynamic, moving iron, and induction apparatuses; instant, average and effective (RMS) values; errors; measurement of several quantities and parameters with analog instruments.
• Digital Measuring Instruments: the t/f counter; D/A and A/D converters; digital voltmeters and multimeters.
• Visualization and Registration Instruments: the analog oscilloscope, the digital oscilloscope, the parallel and the super heterodyne spectrum analyzers; FFT; X-Y tracer.
• Methods for measuring electrical and non-electrical quantities. Measuring transducers. Measuring transformers.
