Objectives
Background knowlege of Organic Chemistry for Biomedical Engineers, as well graduated in Biologia Celular e Molecular.
The organic chemistry must be approached in a logical and systematic way. Organic chemistry is a course in which one idea almost always builds on another that has gone before.

2. Chemical bonds and organic molecules structure
3. Stereochemistry
4. Fundamental organic chemical reactions
5. Acid-base reactions
6. Nucleophilic substitution reactions at saturated carbons
7. Elimination Reactions
8. Carbonyl Group reactivity
9. Some examples of radical reactions
10. Introduction to spectroscopic methods in organic chemistry.
11. Some examples of important organic compounds in biology and new materials
Teaching method
Theoretical lectures are given in a way which avoids monotony. During the lectures experimental results are used to demonstrate concepts which exemplify the importance of the understanding of chemistry. Problems sessions are an essential part of the course and at least four hours per week are dedicated to this. Although in the first sessions the lecturer leads the students into discussions it is expected that later the students will be encouraged to take over this initiative.
When justified molecular models are used as a visual aid. 3D graphics and other audio-visual aids are used whenever possible.
Problem sessions are also very important for the lecturer to identify difficulties that the students may have in their understanding and to find solutions to these difficulties by discussion. This is done in such a way that the high level of the course is maintained
Evaluation method
The students must attend 2/3 of the practical periods and 2/3 of the tutorial sessions. The overall mark for the practical sessions must be over 10 for the student to pass.
Problems sheets will be deposited on the respective page in CLIP. During the tutorial the most relevant problems from thes sheets will be resolved.
Only students who satisfy the requirements indicated for the practicals and tutorials will be evaluated. The final mark is a combination of 30% practicals and 70% theoretical. Students with a mark higher than 9.5 from the continuous evaluation will pass. A mark not below than 7.0 for second test (T2) is obligatory.
