Objectives

The main objective of this curricular unit is to provide PhD candidates with essential knowledge about Rehabilitation of Structures, either as a base knowledge or as an area of specialization.

The students that have successfully completed this curricular unit should be able to:
1. Correlate the pathology and mechanisms of degradation with the technique of repair or strengthening to be made in concrete, masonry, wood or metallic structures;
2. Understand the repair in order to increase the life of the structures;
3. Analyze, discuss and compare international regulations, including specific aspects of the strengthening of structures;
4. Understand the fundamental concepts of the design of the strengthened structures and the modelling of their behaviour.
5. Analyze, discuss and compare alternative strengthening structural solutions and identify the most appropriate ones;
6. Be able to apply the knowledge acquired in their specific area of specialization.

Subject matter

Structural pathologies in buildings, monuments and bridges of stone masonry, steel, concrete, wood or mixed structures. Main mechanisms of degradation. Durability of materials and structures.
Repair of structures of buildings and bridges, techniques, materials and their physical and mechanical performance over the life of the structure.
Strengthening of steel structures, concrete, masonry or wood: technology, applications and design.
Important aspects to consider in the strengthening of structures. International Regulations (EC, FIB, FEMA, ACI, JCI, CNR-DT).
