Objectives

Knowledge and understanding goals

  • Routing
  • Quality of service and network dimensioning
  • Transport protocols
  • Emergent topics in computer networking

Know-how goals

  • Ability to setup a small TCP/IP Network
  • Ability to use tools for network analysis and measurement
  • Awareness of representative equipment used in real computer networks
  • Usage of network emulators
  • Usage of cluster networks
  • Research and analyze emergent networking topics

Teaching method

Lectures are intended to support the instructor’s presentation of fundamental issues. Students should, preferably before classes, study the recommended bibliography.

Laboratory sessions take place in a specialized laboratory and their aim is to perform several network configurations and test their performance. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art network gear, identical to the one currently used in industry in small to medium networks. These lab sessions are based on a “hands-on” computer network learning approach.

Group projects allow students to gain insights in hot and emergent computer networking topics.

Evaluation method

Two intermediate tests (2 x 20%). Two article summaries (10%). Two groups of laboratory assignments (25%) and final project (25%).

Tests are closed-book ones but students can use an A4 sheet with their study notes.

When the average of the two tests is below 9,5 grades, students must attend the exam. If the student is obliged to attend the exam, and gets less then 9,5 grades in the exam, he or she fails the course.

Success in the course also requires a minimum of 9 grades in each of the two essays, each of the the laboratory assignments and in the final project. Students that do not attend at least 80% of lab’s sessions also fail the course. These grades are valid in the following year if the student fails the exam.

Late delivery of essays, reports or the final project, imply a penalty of 1 grade per day.

All intermediate grades have resolution of 0.1 grade

Students that skip intermediate test 2, but not  intermediate test 1, may opt to have test 2 in the final exam date (and will skip the exam).
